If your looking for a great read, then you should definitely check out the State of the World 2011: Innovations that Nourish the Planet from The Worldwatch Institute.

Skip right to page 164 and read Small-Scale Livestock Production in Rwanda written by DeVries Consultancy's very own Jim DeVries.  This briefing "From the Field" provides a look into how Heifer International's work in Rwanda is changing lives.

After you've read Jim's article make sure you read the whole book.  They always put together a really great publication.  Every year they focus on a different theme.  In 2010 it was Changing Cultures.  According to Worldwatch, this year they take a "compelling look at the global food crisis, with particular emphasis on global innovations that can help solve a worldwide problem."  Heifer International has definitely created innovative ways to address food issues around the world.
